A hernia is a protrusion through the abdominal wall. The protrusion may be through an existing canal (femoral canal, inguinal canal) or it can simply be due to a weakness of the muscle fibres allowing the protrusion to occur. The contents may include fat or bowel.
A hernia will present as a lump. The lump may come and go (reducible) or the lump may persist. If the lump persists then it is irreducible. If the blood supply to the contents becomes obstructed then it becomes strangulated.

A hernia my be entirely asymptomatic. A patient may notice a lump which can increase or decrease in size and may be totally painless.
Sometimes the lump will cause an ache or a dragging sensation and sometimes the lump may become acutely painful. Any lump which is painful in particular where the pain is increasing should be treated as an emergency.
